We've been critiquing companies as to what they are doing to contribute positively to the environment in which they operate. As we close this exercise, I'd like to ask you what can you do to make a positive impact on the environment?
National Geographic aired an interesting documentary titled "The Human Footprint" where they show exactly how much waste every American will generate in the course of his or her lifetime. This includes things the foods we eat, the personal hygiene products we use, the clothes we were and the resources that go into making those products.
I'd like you to check out the link to National Geographic located here:

Please take a look at the "Carbon Calculator" - and see what you can do to reduce your carbon emissions. Please post your thoughts to the recommendations here.

It is vital that we pay attention to how important it is to conserve the resources that we have been given and not to abuse them. Our Earth is changing dramatically, with Global Warming on the rise it has caused change in climate and eventually will be a greater problem if ignored. We need to find solutions to prevent pollution in the air also because CFCs are destroying the Ozone causing severe health problems for many. Even though these problems are less attainable for us students to fix as of now, does not mean we cannot contribute in some way. What we can do to make a positive impact on the environment are simple things such as, recycling, trying to not liter as much, joining organizations that work to promote eco friendly projects and possibly buy vehicles that keep the environment in mind.
Scales of environmental problems are huge and a man seems powerless in front of them. Nonetheless, as we are facing the facts that many species are extinguishing every minute and some lands are vanishing under the sea every year, there is no time just to blame other people, companies and/or countries. Moreover, I think many of the problems are results of pile upped small negligence by individuals and thus we should not ignore small steps that we can take in our daily life. I think Carbon Calculator is good tool to understand the actual impact of each small step with numbers, especially when you can learn it is not as small as you expect.
61,234 is my estimated house hold emission gases and i currently live with
4 people. we recycle everything from glass to the weekly newpapers.
Reducing the heat during the winter and not using as much air conditioning
have been saving my parents money for years and the earth. We also just
put in a new water heater which is energy efficient and not to mention the
hot water is still hot and havnt had any problems at all. having the
thermostat on a time setting helps when we are away from the home. Why
would you pay to keep your house nice and cozy if there is no one to enjoy
the comfort. My mom also has recently purchased a hybrid which has no
problems exept replacing the battery of the car. As much as my family
tries it is going to take a world effort to save the ozone.
When I used to think of "going green" I think I tried to make it more complicated than it really is! After reading many of the articles and taking a look at my Carbon Calculator, I realized that it's more simple than I thought! Making a positive impact on the environment can be as simple as recycling, or using less powerful light bulbs and even driving less. Well I already recycle and using less powerful light bulbs would not be a big deal. And the ridiculous gas prices will make it easier for me to cut down on the amount of driving I do. I can either walk or ride a back! If I would have known it were this simple I would've been doing these things a long time ago.
in my house it is only me and my mom and we both know that conserving energy is very important. we recycle everything that is recyclable and keep lights off during the day that are not neccesary. we also use energy efficient light bulbs, and solar powered lights outside. keeping the windows open when it is warm is something we do to reduce how much AC we use so we try but 2 people doesnt make a huge difference, everyone will have to make a consistent effort to change our ways. i think hybrid cars are a great start and slowly but surely we are starting to see more of them which is only a positive.
There are lots of small things we can do for saving our earth. As many of you knows, global warming is serious problem since long time ago. Few years ago, i noticed just change bulbs can save a lot of money, so I changed all bulbs in my apartment 100 watts to 25 watts energy saving bulbs and I also changed my parents house's bulbs too. I pay less bill and having more brighter lights.
Everyone should be doing their own part in recycling and conservation. I believe most people though, are not educated in how products are manufactured and brought to us, and if they understood the amounts of energy and resources used to do so, people would feel more inclined to be less wasteful.
As I see, it's easiest for people to care for the well doing of our planet if it's about saving money, too. I think this is only effective way as I already said.
On the other hand I see that mostly rich families don't care a lot environmental damage because they are no big money savers. I hope that their next generation will be a little bit more conscious of their responsibility towards our planet.
I have probably done 5 different essays during my English 102 class pertaining to global warming. With all of the greenhouse gases affecting our environment, I cannot stress how important it is to do something as throwing out garbage. Making sure that garbage is separated from cans, paper, and bottles is detrimental to our world. The glacier ice caps are melting very fast and when the vegetation in our oceans are dying from the warmer temperature, our ecosystem will soon be diminished. I have to admit that I'm not the perfect example of always helping our environment, but I improve on doing the little things. I throw out my candy wrappers instead of tossing it out in the middle of the street; I make sure my parents don't mix our newspaper with our garbage or recycled bottles or cans bin. But then again, I'm a smoker, so that definately contributes to our pollution. I am lazy in some occasions which prevents me from being environmentally safe, but exercising the simple tasks will help me be a better person. I probably intend to have kids when I get older and I don't want to see them go through what we could've prevented.
