We've heard a lot of talk in the media about decreasing our dependence on foreign oil. For one reason or another our dependency continues. Here is a link to what GE is doing to help: http://www.ge.com/news/audio_video/index.html
Questions: Do you think that biofuel is something that can completely replace oil? Why aren't companies doing more research in this area? How come we don't hear about the work that many companies are doing already? What do you think about the concept of biofuel?
GE seems to be taking the lead in this area. We would assume that in the five stage process of social responsibility that they are at least at the "strategy" stage and may even be at the "civil" stage. How would you classify their level of involvement in CSR and why?

There will come a time when biofuel has to replace oil and I think as soon as we're running out of oil, we'll find a lot of alternative energy sources.
It's just not necessary yet and I think that's the reason because many companies don't really care.
The problem is, that the consequences and the environmental damages aren't obviously visible yet so public doesn't care.
I think that people and firms should be forced to work on alternative energy sources by increasing the gas prices considerably. Some Europeans say that Bush doesn't do that because it would harm the economy.
i strongly believe that biofuel can take over our dependency on oil. the way i see it is if brazil can power their automobiles with sugar cane, something they have been doing for years now, why cant the most advanced and powerful country rely on something other than oil? i know it will not happen soon but i think we can eventually make the switch. i dont really understand why we dont hear more about companies researching and testing biofuels because it is a very positive thing and something the public needs to know about.
I don't believe that biofuel is something that can completely replace oil. It's possible considering that anything is possible as long as technology improves, but in this case right now, I think that biofuel can only just be an alternative or substitute to oil. Companies aren't researching so much on this since it's just coming out and it's not something the media is open to yet. In that part, media doesn't know yet probably because GE does not know the effects/harms of it so until they do, it's not yet that big in the media.
I am not sure yet if we can completely take over oil with biofuel as oil is not only the source of power but also used to produce many other products such as plastic, synthetic fabric and even shampoo. Yet, I agree that biofuel will be great alternative to mitigate our huge dependence on oil. At the same time, as there is always downside, biofuel demand boost is causing negative impact on other factor (cf. sugarcane demand increase make meat price increase as it was feed of cow, pig). In this regards, I can understand that biofuel is not yet the perfect solution to be reported openly at media and I think research and development should be enhanced at government level (cf. enhanced government research, tax support).
I believe biofuel eventually replace oil. Finding alternative energy sources will be the most important task of our generation. However it needs enormous investment therefor companies and goverment should work in close cooperation.
a lot of automobile companies were pushing against hybrid cars at first, they did not want them to happen because they recieve a lot of money from oil companies because of the way they set up their vehicles. I wish we only used biofuels because it would be better in everyway possible. The economy may take a hit at first but it would be the best in th end for evyerone.
Even though biofuel has not been researched and develpoed well nowaways, I believe that biofuel can be replace the oil. However, there must been a lot of pressure from political and oil companies just like they used their power when General Motors developed electrical vehicles. They probably knew it could be replace the oil but they just dont do it.
Biofuel has a great chance of permanently replacing foreign oil. Just considering the fact that biofuels are going to drastically decrease our greenhouse gases is an enormous benefit for our world. I believe the draw-back from this idea is the supply of resources. There has not been enough studies to confirm alternate sources to produce biofuels. It may not happen soon, but I can bet that this change will happen before globabl warming occurs.
I feel that it is irresponsible on our part to not have a stronger dependency on alternative renewable energy sources. I remember learning in 8th grade how difficult and and scarce fossil fuels are, and it seems there has been very little progress dealing with this issue. The larger problem is the most powerful people in the world are the oil tycoons, and they hold the power over legislature since they fund them.
The only way that Biofuel is going to have a chance at replacing oil is if the automobile industry updates their technology in line with the new fuel.Companies are probably not doing more research in these ares because they cannot get the funding due to politics in this countries and many others around the world. The concept of Biofuel is good and we eventually will need some kind of back up to oil. Their level of involvement I think at this point the idea is at the strategy level.
