Corporate Social Responsibility...what does it mean?
We've started to discuss Corporate Social Responsibility in class. We've talked about the "formal" definitions now I'd like to get your thoughts on what CSR to you. What should a company do? Not do? What types of activities should businesses be involved in? Are there activities which businesses should not be involved in?

I believe that a large corporation should get involved in anything to benefit the well being of their consumers. That could be fund raising for charities such as the Ronald Mcdonald charity they give back to kids which happen to be one of there bigger target markets. I really don't see anything wrong in giving back to the consumers, but i would say don't exclude any race or religions.
i agree with mendo i believe the large companies and corporations have a responsibility to donate money to charities if they are experiencing properice times. i think after all of the expenses and employees are payed then they should also give to schools as well as to better the community. i just believe companies should not intervene with consumers personal lives like mendo said with religion and such
I concur with both comments. Corporate social responsibility is about doing anything that improves and benefits your organization, but also gives back to your consumers. Something that can help benefit the company could be something that most people are into. There are companies that also support non-profit organizations like the Breast Cancer Society or Red Cross. I think that charity and support are the two biggest responsibilities that can benefit a business.
I think CSR is a corporate activity to distribute part of its profit to customers and the society as a member of community. I agree with others that CSR activities should not be done in area which can cause conflict such as religions. As a company can cause larger impact on society, I think CSR is more effective in area which we have social problems such as environmental problem and poverty issue which are not easy to deal with single man power.
i believe that corporations should give a portion of their profits to charity. i would almost go as far and say that i think the government should mandate that they give money to charity or too something that will benefit the whole world. I say this because i think that giving to charity helps everyone involved. the company gets good PR and receive tax cuts. And the charity gets money to make a difference for whatever they are doing. Also i agree with akanem that the only way we will see real change in poverty and the environment is with these types of charities and non for profit organizations. But i do agree with Chazen that the company should only give money once all the employees and expenses are paid.
I agree, Corporate Social Responsibility is about doing anything that positively improves and benefits your organization. Charities are definatly a good way in doing so. I used to work at T.J. Maxx and on many occasions we would have fund raisers where we would ask every customer if they would like to donate a dollar to one of our fund raisers. We raised money for the needy children who need school supplies, we raised money for the hungry homeless individuals, we raised money for a breast cancer fund. i think doing this was definatly a good look for T.J. Maxx because it showed the corporations willingness to aid the people in need and give back to our community.
Corporate Social Responsibility means to conduct a company in a legitimate manner. CSR associates itself with core values and ethics. What companies should do is make sure that the employees are treated fairly, the concerns and suggestions are taken into account and that responsibility and accountability are rewarded. Anything less of this is not acceptable.
