Diversity in American companies

We've been talking over the last few days about human resouces and staffing issues. We've also discussed how one of the stakeholders that businesses should be concerned about is their internal stakeholders-employees. I'd like you to read this article from the Wall Street Journal
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120370822092186297.html
and answer the following questions:

What will it really take to get equal respresentation at the top-level of Fortune 500 companies?

Why do you think that most companies claim to promote diversity however there is not equal pay for all employees? Or equal representation at all levels of the organization? Do you think that the discrepancies are intentional or unintentional?

Why do you think that this topic is included as part of Corporate Social Responsibility?

I honestly feel that in order to get an equal representation at the top-level of fortune 500 companies, a change has to begin in the mind-set of the top-level corporate officers. These companies claim to promote diversity because it makes their company look/sound better to consumers. In reality, I think that the top-level corporate officers are afraid to give minorities and woman top-level power. Their companies have been successful just the way they are and a change like that would be taking a risk for them. I personally don't think it's fair nor ethical. In the artical, it stated that there is a large gap in the education levels of young woman and men but men are always more likely to have a higher position in work than women. I'm sure there are many minorities and woman that are better qualified for corporate positions than white men, but these companies aren't willing to put them in power. The change has to begin with them. I truly believe these discrepancies are intentional. It's not a co-incidence that white men are given higher level positions and more pay, this is just the way these businesses choose to function.

I think that this development is kind of natural. If the so called minorities get equal to the white- leading men that means that the status of these white men decreases because they are not major any more. Nobody wants to loose a supremacy.
I think it will take time and the mentioned minorities have to continue to put pressure on the pressure to get a better pay.

=Well, these kinds of story has been big issue since long times ago. Even though we talked about this long times ago, this think never changes it, and I believe either it is going to take those companies a long time or it never going to change it sooner or later.
I agree that there are many smart people (including asian, african, and hispanic) than white men but seems like they do not accept these situation. People just do not want to change old style.

i believe that it may never happen. Just like education it is still a problem to get into schools because you are a certain race. In the NFL they set a rule where you must interview a non-Caucasian for the job. That may be one option cause since then they have increased the numbers of african american coaches

the main thing i believe is that there will always be discrimination and no matter how hard we try it will always be around. i think some one should be hired on their credentials and quality of work and not their race. if an African American had much more knowledge and skill at a position than a Caucasian then i believe the African American should have the job and i am aware that this is not the case in many situations and i defiently think companies should focus on diversity much more because 6 african american fortune 500 CEOs just doesnt cut it.

If a change is going to happen in these fortune 500 companies then it is up to the top executives to make the change. It is also up to women to keep getting their four year degree and work toward performing at their utmost potential. By doing so, they will eventually be able to have certain jobs and get those promotions.

The discrepancies are definitely intentional. Companies have to make themselves seem more marketable so they promote diversity, but do not actually live up to what they promote.

This topic is a part of corporate and social responsibility because it deals with the code of ethics. Many companies deter from conducting a legitimate business and therefore make the employees and their families suffer. I.E Enron

I think diversity issue is part of CSR as we are facing with big gap between the reality and ideal gender & racial balance among top managements of companies (especially Fortune 500 companies). We need to seek diversity in top-level because those are who represents many other employees and customers in the society. I want to believe that not all the discrepancies are intentional but still people have subconscious bias and thus we need to keep pushing for greater diversity.
